#544Chrome Quantize

A blob of liquid chrome is quantized into cubes and back, one resolution at a time. The finest cubes condense out of the liquid and merge level by level — eight children converging into each parent — up to a handful of coarse polished blocks; then every block splits into eight again, seams opening and glowing, children outside the blob shrinking away and new ones growing in where it bulges, so each level hugs the smooth surface closer until the liquid rises through the finest grid and the cubes dissolve into it. The grid is traced with a stateless 3D DDA and a ray–box test per cell that leaps through empty space by the blob's distance. The chrome is real rather than ideal — a faint orange-peel waviness, hazy smudges and darkened creases where the metaballs merge — and it reflects an HDR studio of strip lights over a lit grid floor, blurred by the local roughness. On the detail page, drag to orbit.
