#543Slick Rain

Drops of water fall into a still pool slicked with oil, shot like a macro photograph. The whole scene is one raymarched distance field, and each impact plays out like a real splash: a cavity punches into the pool and throws up a thin crown sheet whose rim breaks into cusps that fling droplets off on ballistic arcs; the collapsing cavity fires a slender Worthington jet that pinches off a bead, which rises and falls back while rings spread outward with fine capillary ripples running ahead. The pool is dark water under an oil film — thin-film interference sampled at three wavelengths paints it in swirling oily rainbows that shift with every ripple, and each impact shoves the oil aside into a clear hole that slowly closes. The drops, crowns and jets are clear water: rays are refracted through them, so each drop carries a tiny lensed image of the slick behind it. It all reflects a slowly turning HDR studio, and the reflections are defocused by a shallow depth of field. On the detail page, click to let a drop fall; drag to orbit.
