#346Diatom Patterns

The glassy silica valve of a diatom under a darkfield microscope: an n-fold radial fold tiles a jittered Voronoi lattice of micro-pores (areolae) into an ornate symmetric shell, ringed by radial striae, a central raphe nodule and a bright frustule rim, all rendered as luminous silica edges on near-black. Every few seconds the specimen morphs into a fresh species with a new symmetry order and pore pattern. Hover to raise the symmetry order, scroll to breathe the pore density, press to grow a brand-new individual.
