#347Pollen Grains

A scanning-electron-micrograph of a single pollen grain: a view ray is analytically intersected with a sphere, then its surface is bump-sculpted into the exine — echinate spikes, a reticulate honeycomb of muri and lumina, or a smooth grain with a few sunken pores — all built from one even scatter of surface directions. A matcap-style grazing monochrome relief with edge-brightening and cavity shadow gives the classic grey SEM look, over a soft depth-of-field vignette. The grain turns slowly and, every few seconds, morphs between species. Move the pointer to relight the detector, scroll to change species, press to cycle the sculpture.
