A straight desert road runs to a vanishing point under a sun-bleached sky, distant dune-mountains stacked on the horizon. Hot air rising off the asphalt refracts the scene through a vertical index gradient — the waver builds toward the ground — and just below the horizon an inferior mirage flips the sky down onto the tarmac, so a shimmering false lake pools over the road and never gets closer.
